Mental Attitude: Diabetes May Cause Cognitive Impairment.
Can diabetes hurt the brain's performance? According to a study of nearly 1,500 older men, the answer may be yes. After completing various tasks designed to gauge each participant's cognitive abilities, researchers found that non-diabetics generally outperformed the diabetics at age 65. Follow-up assessments at age 71 showed that both diabetics and non-diabetics experienced the same rate of cognitive decline during the intervening six years. Because the rate of decline was the consistent between both groups, the researchers speculate that type 2 diabetics may experience a slow down in cognitive function at an earlier age than non-diabetics.

Health Alert: Many Migraine Sufferers Are Prescribed Inappropriate Medications.
Ineffective and potentially addictive drugs are commonly prescribed to many people with migraines. Investigators behind two newly published studies found that more than 50% of adults with migraines at a single headache treatment center had previously been prescribed a narcotic painkiller such as OxyContin and Vicodin to treat their headaches while a similar percentage had previously been prescribed barbiturates for the same purpose. Unfortunately, both drug classes are potentially addictive, can cause withdrawal symptoms, and can make migraines worse in the long run. The researchers also found that among a group of more than 21,000 children and teens with migraines, 16% were prescribed narcotic painkillers to treat their headaches. Experts say that the findings are upsetting and shocking.

Diet: Does Chocolate Benefit the Heart?
Consuming milk chocolate or dark chocolate regularly may lower your risk for heart disease. The researchers found that people who ate up to 3.5 ounces (~100 grams) of chocolate a week had a 14% lower risk of heart disease and a 23% lower risk of stroke than those who didn’t eat chocolate during the course of the twelve-year study.

Chiropractic: Arthroscopic Knee Surgery for Older Patients May Not Be Worth It.
A new analysis suggests that arthroscopic surgery to relieve chronic knee pain in middle-aged and older people is only temporarily effective and may even be harmful. The analysis revealed that the procedure was linked to a small amount of pain relief, but such relief usually did not persist longer than six months. Researchers also found that arthroscopic surgery does not significantly improve physical function, and though complications from knee arthroscopy are rare, some people can develop clots in the legs and lungs. Dr. Andy Carr, the author of an accompanying journal editorial writes, "Supporting or justifying a procedure with the potential for serious harm, even if this is rare, is difficult when that procedure offers patients no more benefit than a placebo."

Wellness/Prevention: Breastfeeding Benefits Kid’s Teeth.
A new study shows that the more a baby breastfeeds, the less likely they will develop any kind of misalignment in their teeth. The study found that the risk of overbite was one-third lower for babies who exclusively breastfed for three to six months compared with those who didn't. If the babies breastfed at least six months or more, the risk of overbite dropped by 44%. Babies who breastfed for six months or more were also 72% less likely to have moderate-to-sever misalignment of the teeth at age five than those who were not breastfed.
