Mental Attitude: Surprises Help Babies Learn.
Researchers say that babies learn the best when their existing expectations about the world are contradicted. Study co-author Dr. Lisa Feigenson explains, "For young learners, the world is an incredibly complex place filled with dynamic stimuli. How do learners know what to focus on and learn more about, and what to ignore? Our research suggests that infants use what they already know about the world to form predictions. When these predictions are shown to be wrong, infants use this as a special opportunity for learning."

Health Alert: Childhood Trauma Linked to Increased Asthma Risk.
According to new research, children who experience trauma such as divorce, the death of a parent, or domestic violence are more likely to develop asthma. Investigators found that about 25% of kids exposed to five or more childhood traumas had asthma, compared with only 12% who hadn't experienced any traumas. The study doesn't prove that a traumatic events cause asthma, only that there is an association between the two.

Diet: Green Tea May Lower Risk for Dementia.
Individuals over the age of 60 who drink green tea at least once a week appear to have a lower risk for dementia and mild declines in thinking and memory when compared with non-green tea drinkers. The findings are from a survey involving 723 participants who were grouped by how often they drank green tea: not at all, one to six days a week, or every day. Compared with green tea drinkers, participants who did not drink green tea scored slightly lower on a thinking and memory test, had fewer hobbies, fewer years of education, and exercised less, all of which are factors previously tied to cognitive impairment.

Exercise: Exercise Beneficial Even in Polluted Air.
Danish researchers have discovered that the health benefits of exercise appear to outweigh the potential harm of air pollution. The study included more than 52,000 adults who lived in two large cities in Denmark. At the end of the study, investigators found 20% fewer deaths among those who exercised compared with those who did not, even for those who lived in the most polluted areas in each city. Dr. Zorana Jovanovic Andersen, an associate professor at the University's of Copenhagen adds, "Air pollution is often perceived as a barrier to exercise in urban areas. In the face of an increasing health burden due to rising physical inactivity and obesity in modern societies, our findings provide support for efforts in promoting exercise, even in urban areas with high pollution."

Chiropractic: Lifestyle Factors Can Increase Shoulder Pain Risk!
It is no surprise that shoulder pain is the most common musculoskeletal complaint among television camera operators, and the greatest risk factors for shoulder pain among this group are a heavy physical burden and poor ergonomics. However, new research finds that to a lesser extent, lifestyle factors may also play a role in whether or not a camera operator sustains a musculoskeletal injury. More specifically, researchers found that being overweight can more than triple an individual's risk, and among those who do not regularly exercise, the risk of injury is 2.37 times greater when compared with those who do regularly exercise.

Wellness/Prevention: Texting Bans Linked to Drop in Car Crash Injuries.
In states that have adopted strict bans on texting while driving, researchers have observed a 7% reduction in automobile crash-related hospitalizations with the greatest drop in states in which law enforcement can pull over drivers over just the suspicion of texting. While many would suspect texting from behind the wheel to be more of a problem among teen drivers, the worst offenders appear to be adults in the 25-40 year-old age range.
