As a sports injury specialist, I am often asked, “How do you know when to use ice and when to use heat on an injury, whether it be from a sporting activity or an accidental trauma?” As strange as it may seem, some of our patients have actually been hurt or injured by the improper application of ice or heat prior to coming to our offices. Most athletes have learned to apply ice to an acute (recent) injury, like a sprained ankle or wrist, but many of our patients, athletes included, wonder when it’s appropriate to apply heat. The following guidelines will help you sort it out.
There are two basic types of pain associated with sports injuries and accidental injuries: acute and chronic.
1] Acute pain is due to a recent injury (within 72 hours) and is usually of rapid onset and short duration. (although it can become chronic pain if left untreated)
2] Chronic pain develops slowly, has been present for several weeks, and is often very persistent and long-lasting.
Acute injuries are sudden traumatic injuries that occur immediately or within approximately 3 days). Typically acute injuries are a result of sudden impact or trauma such as a fall, sprain, or collision and it's pretty obvious as to what caused the injury.
Acute injuries are evidenced by the immediate onset of pain, tenderness, redness, heat, swelling and inflammation at the site of injury. Swelling and often discoloration, along with sudden pain are the most obvious signs of an acute injury.
Chronic injuries, on the other hand, are gradual in onset and appearance. The symptoms of pain, stiffness and swelling are usually constant but can be transient in nature, fading in and out, and sometimes going away completely before returning. The pain associated with chronic injuries is often deep and dull in nature. Chronic injuries are usually the result of degeneration or wear and tear, and often the result of “repetitive trauma” or overuse. However, as noted above, chronic injuries and pain can also develop when an acute injury is not properly treated and not given the time or care needed heal.
Here is the standard rule for applying Ice and Heat: Use ice for acute injuries and heat for chronic injuries.
However, as with all rules, this one is not unbreakable and should be followed by rule #2 which is: After the initial 72 hours, use EITHER ice or heat based upon what gives you the most relief.
The physiologic basis for using ice and heat for therapy is based on the fact that they both increase circulation of blood and lymph to the injured areas. However, they accomplish this in completely different ways. Heat accomplishes this immediately, while ice produces a delayed response of increased circulation known as a “reflex hyperemia”. That is the reflexive opening of circulatory vessels after the initial cold has worn off and the circulation returns with increased intensity.
As a Board Certified Sports Injury Specialist, I’ve found that most of our world class Olympic, professional and elite athletes prefer to use ice on their injuries. This is often due to the unfortunate fact that elite athletes commonly are suffering from acute injuries, or re-injury of chronic injuries.
Briefly stated; the short term benefits of ice are: reduction of pain, reduction of swelling, increased tissue perfusion (penetration) of oxygen and growth factors. The short term benefits of heat are: relaxation of muscle spasms, increased blood flow to de-oxygenated tissues, endorphin release. All of these factors contribute to reducing pain, increasing function, and facilitating healing processes.
In my next blog I will address the proper techniques for applying ice and heat so as to obtain maximum benefit from both, and how to avoid potential (serious) injury from the improper application of either one.
Yours in excellent health . . . whether hot or cold!

A recent study on lower back surgery demonstrated discouraging results regarding returning to gainful employment. The study showed that of those patients who chose spine surgery over non-surgical intervention for damaged spinal discs, only 26% of the spine surgery patients returned to work, compared to 67% of the non-surgical group. The article was posted at www.msnbc.com and can be referenced by clicking here. The article goes on to demonstrate the increase in the use of strong pain medications after spine surgery, to go along with the increased disability reate. Although spine surgery can be a life saver for some, statistical studies continue to prove that only 1-2 out of 10 spine surgery patients actually are much better off after the surgery than before. This is mostly due to the complexity of the spine/ disc / joint / musculoligamentous / neurological network of tissues, alteration of biomechanical functioning of the spinal units, and the collateral damage that occurs to important neuromusculoskeletal components during and after these highly invasive surgeries.
Most patients who understand the invasiveness of surgical intervention realize that spine surgeries typically either remove important functional supportive tissue, or alter the anatomy and physiology altogether by fusing vertebral segments that were designed to be in motion. Surgical intervention as a treatment for disc herniation often results in removal of viable tissues, resulting in weakening of the supportive integrity of the spine and discs, setting the entire biomechanical system on a course for failure.
If you think of a spinal disc like a car tire, the thick outer rubber that contacts the road can wear down, develop cracks and tears which either result in a slow leak or sudden blow out of the tire. Similarly, the inner shock absorbing gel of our spinal discs can either gradually lead our or damaged disc, or the disc can "blow out" or herniate all at once. Rather than repairing the lead or the blow out (herniation) must surgical techniques either remove portions of the disc (or tire as in our analogy) making the disc (or tire) less durable and more likely to fail further. An auto mechanic wouldn't advise "tire surgery" in most cases, but would usually recommend new tires. The problem with this analogy is that we can't just order a "new set of discs" for our spines . . . or can we?
With advances in non-surgical technologies and regenerative medicine techniques, spinal disc regeneration which was once considered impossible, is now being recognized as a viable solution in many cases. Stem cell therapies, nutraceuticals, and laser medicine are just a few of the techniques being studied and utilized. However, at the South Coast Spine Center of San Diego, we've have utilized and developed procedures and techniques that hold promise as the safest, least invasive and most successful for actually increasing the spinal disc height utilizing regenerative medicine principles. Our procedures have been proven in recent studies to actually increase spinal disc height measured before and after treatment. Click here to view this recent study.

Here's an informative post today from John's Hopkins Medicine on Osteoporosis and Hip Fractures.
The Sobering Facts About Hip Fracture
Many people fear hip fractures, and with good reason. Of all types of fractures, hip fractures have the most significant impact on the quality of life.
Alarmingly, close to 25 percent of those over age 50 who break a hip will die within a year. In addition, 40 percent are unable to walk independently a year after they've broken a hip, and 60 percent are unable to perform basic activities of daily living, such as dressing themselves. Because of these devastating consequences, preserving and boosting bone mass and preventing falls and fractures are crucial.
A hip fracture usually occurs when a person falls from a standing position, with the hip taking the impact of the fall, although less traumatic falls also can cause hip fractures. More than 90 percent of the 350,000 hip fractures that occur each year in the United States are the result of a fall. The rate of hip fracture begins to increase at age 50, doubling every five to six years. Nearly half of women who reach age 90 have had a hip fracture. Men account for nearly 30 percent of hip fractures.
The risk factors for a hip fracture are:
What to expect. The symptoms of hip fracture are not subtle. They include pain in the groin or buttock, inability to put weight on the leg on the affected side, or pain when trying to bear weight. Hip fractures may also interrupt the nerves or blood vessels that supply the leg. All hip fractures require surgical repair or replacement, and treatment is often required for injuries related to the fall, such as head injuries.
Additionally, it is vitally important to note that the reported overall mortality (or death) rate for hip fractures is 15-20% (1 out of 5). Yet in older persons this can increase to 36% (over 1 out of three) over the year following hip fracture. These numbers are significant, and should motivate anyone at risk or potentially at risk of hip fracture due to osteoporosis or osteopenia to seek out appropriate medical attention. However, one must also be fully aware of the risks associated with osteoporosis medications like; Fosamas, Boniva, or Actonel.
Our offices provide a non-pharmaceutical, proven, NATURAL way to safely and quickly reverse osteoporosis and significantly reduce the risk of hip fractures. That's why we offer a complimentary Osteoporosis Reversal Visit at the South Coast Spine Center when you call: 619-472-2225. With school back in session and many children and teens getting back into school sports programs, I thought it would be a good idea to address a subject that has been gaining a lot of media attention lately.
That subject is: Concussion, and it's defined as: an immediate and transient loss of neuronal function secondary to trauma. It's important to realize that concussion often goes unrecognized in adolescent sporting activities for 2 primary reasons. First, a high percentage of young athletes who suffer concussion have admitted in recent studies that they often do not report their concussive events (up to 78% in one study went unreported) to their coaches due to their concern over letting their team down or being taken out of play. Second, concussions are often not reported due to a lack of understanding of what constitutes a concussion. Both of these reasons are cause for concern and be should be addressed with greater clarity between coaches, athletes and their parents. It is a serious matter and could make a difference between life and death or permanent neurological impairment.
Concussion is not confined to just "getting knocked out" or losing consciousness, although that is the most prominent feature of a severe head trauma. Concussions are actually more frequently sustained (85% of the time) without a loss of consciousness. So here is a simpler definition of what is meant by a "loss of neuronal function secondary to trauma".
I will list the 5 most prominent signs and symptoms: (one or more usually indicate concussion)
Concussion can occur without actual blunt trauma to the head. If an athlete sustains a full body trauma in the form of a collision with another athlete or object, or from a fall to the ground, without actually striking the head, there can still be significant trauma to the brain that causes a concussion, or even worse, bleeding into or around the brain.
The key factors involve immediate recognition of a concussive event through proper observation and attention following a trauma. Properly trained, the coach, trainer, or fellow team mates can contribute significantly to recognizing the trauma an athlete endures, and then making sure they receive the proper attention through medical evaluation with a team physician or specialist right away. This sequence is of utmost importance to the injured athlete, as concussive injuries can be lethal, especially when they occur more than once! Second Impact Syndrome is when a second concussion can lead to bleading within or around the brain, resulting in permanent paralysis, or other severe loss of neurologic function, . . . or even death.
A well trained team doctor can immediately administer a Standardized Assessment of Concussion (SAC) that only takes 5 minutes. The testing includes grading the concussion in terms of orientation, memory, neurologic function, Loss of Consciousness duration, amnesia (degree of retrograde or anterograde), sensation, coordination, concentration, exertion maneuvers, and delayed recall, to name a few. This would be followed by appropriate neurological evaluation and testing, resting physically and psychologically (cognitive function, ie. schoolwork, video games, and internet), and adherence to carefully constructed "return to play" guidelines. As mentioned above, these types of injuries must be taken very seriously due to their potential for becoming lethal.

Osteoporosis is often referred to as "the silent epidemic", affecting over 10 million Americans. It is a potentially serious disease that can result in debilitating and sometimes life threatening stress fractures. Supplementing the diet with Calcium, Magnesium and Vitamin D3, while increasing weight bearing exercises are helpful, but oftentimes are just not enough to reverse the process of bone weakening.
Supposed "bone strengthening" drugs like Fosamax, Boniva, and Actonel, although proven effective for getting more Calcium into the bones, come with the price of causing other health risks, ie. osteonecrosis (bone death), severe pathologic stress fractures, (like the one pictured above) and cardiac arrythmias. Since they stop the uptake of old "dead" bone, and simply deposit more Calcium on top of the dead bone, they are not improving bone health in the long term, but rather making them more susceptible to injury and disease by causing them to become more brittle and ultimately weaker and subject to breaking.
Enter the new realm of "Space Age" regenerative medicine! Over 50 years ago, Soviet scientists found that they could increase the bone density and strength of their Cosmonauts who experienced bone loss while under the effects of microgravity when in space. They used a technology called "Whole Body Vibration". This was achieved by having their Cosmonauts stand and exercise on a finely tuned synchonized vibrational platform before and after their space missions. The results were astounding. Soviet Cosmonauts were able to stay in space over 400 days per mission (almost 4 times longer than US Astronauts) due to the increased bone density created by the Whole Body Vibration. Their bones didn't just have more Calcium, but were stronger, more durable, and less prone to fracture or injury, with no negative side effects. Living Bone tissue was being regenerated due to the physiologic effects of Whole Body Vibration.
This technology was also being used on Soviet Olympians in their quest for world dominance in sports. Studies were proving faster recovery times, increased strength, faster reflexes, improved circulation of blood and lymph, elevation of circulating human growth hormone, faster running, higher jumping, better sleep, and less joint and muscle pain. This caught the attention of Dutch Olympic Trainer, Guus van der Meer, who developed and created the "Power Plate", which is now the world's best known whole body vibration delivery system. It's acceleration training component is being used by the worlds top athletes from virtually every sport. (You can learn more about the Power Plate at: www.sandiegopowerplate.org)
The Power Plate has been proven in clinical studies to actually reverse osteoporosis in 6 months. (no other vibrational device can make this claim) I have been able to cut that time in half for my patients by improving the protocol with some additional "natural evidence based" ergogenic aids. Now those who are diagnosed with Osteoporosis have a safe, much more effective alternative to potentially dangerous drugs, for reversing Osteoporosis and more importantly, improving bone and full body health! Our center offers 3 Power Plates, including the most advanced Pro 6 Air Adaptive, with ProMotion Upper Body Cables for a complete whole body workout.

Study Design. Marrow mesenchymal cells (MSCs) contain stem cells and possess the ability to regenerate bone, cartilage, and fibrous tissues. Here, we applied this regenerative ability to intervertebral disc regeneration therapy in an attempt to develop a new spinal surgery technique.
Objective. We analyzed the regenerative restoration ability of autologous MSCs in the markedly degenerated intervertebral discs.
Summary of Background Data. Fusion for lumbar intervertebral disc instability improves lumbago. However, fused intervertebral discs lack the natural and physiologic functions of intervertebral discs. If intervertebral discs can be regenerated and repaired, then damage to adjacent intervertebral discs can be avoided. We verified the regenerative ability of MSCs by animal studies, and for the first time, performed therapeutic intervertebral disc regeneration therapy in patients and obtained favorable findings.
Methods. Subjects were 2 women aged 70 and 67 years; both patients had lumbago, leg pain, and numbness. Myelography and magnetic resonance imaging showed lumbar spinal canal stenosis, and radiograph confirmed the vacuum phenomenon with instability. From the ilium of each patient, marrow fluid was collected, and MSCs were cultured using the medium containing autogenous serum. In surgery, fenestration was performed on the stenosed spinal canal and then pieces of collagen sponge containing autologous MSCs were grafted percutaneously to degenerated intervertebral discs.
Results. At 2 years after surgery, radiograph and computed tomography showed improvements in the vacuum phenomenon in both patients. On T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging, signal intensity of intervertebral discs with cell grafts was high, thus indicating high moisture contents. . . lumbar disc instability improved. Symptoms wer alleviated in both patients.
Conclusion. The intervertebral disc regeneration therapy using MSC brought about favorable results in these 2 cases. It seems to be a promising minimally invasive treatment. (End of Abstract)
Fibroblasts (Connective Tissue Repair Cells)
". . . Seems to be a promising minimally invasive treatment" INDEED! How about the possibility that Regenerative Medicine, Utilizing Stem Cell Transplantation, is likely to become the Most Important Advancement Ever Seen In Modern Medicine! Most medical researchers and physicians agree that the regenerative medicine approach will become the treatment mode of choice for traumatic or degenerative conditions, with multiple extended applications for curing even hereditary disorders as well. Yet, stem Cell transplantation is only one aspect of regenerative medicine. There are many applications of this emerging branch of medicine ranging from genetic engineering to photomedicine.
In addition to my ongoing research and building relationships with a network of cellular based regenerative medicine professionals around the world, our own complimentary alternative medicine (CAM) procedures often focus on the body's ability to heal itself from within. With our advanced technologies here at the South Coast Spine Center of San Diego, we are priviliged to utilize non-invasive forms of "regenerative medicine" procedures for our patients every day. This is great news for those patients seeking healing alternatives to drugs, needle injections, and surgery.
If you or someone you know are seeking a non-invasive, non-surgical, regenerative medicine approach to resolving disc related lower back or neck pain once and for all, simply contact our offices at: 619-472-2225 and ask about our complimentary "Discovery Visit". Here below is an excellent video explanation of an MRI of a Lumbar (Lower Back) Disc Herniation, as compared to an annular tear in a disc, and a normal, healthy Lumbar Disc. The presentation is made by spine and disc specialist, Dr. Donald Corenman, M.D., D.C., who is a nationally and internationally respected Orthopedic Spine Surgeon at the Vail Spine Institute, at the prestigious sports medicine Steadman Clinic in Vail Colorado. He is one of the top surgeons of choice for the US Olympic Ski Team, and conducts ongoing research on spine surgery and rehabilitation, and has published numerous articles.
At the South Coast Spine Center we have seen a few select cases similar to the one in the video above respond well to our advanced non-surgical methods, enabling our patients to avoid surgical intervention. Our non-surgical methods are not always suitable however, and some cases must be referred for surgical intervention when indicated. That is why we provide a "Complimentary DRX Assessment" with diagnostic testing and MRI review to determine whether a patient is a good candidate for our non-surgical methods, BEFORE attempting surgical intervention.
If you or a loved one suffers from disc related low back pain, sciatica leg pain, neck, shoulder or arm pain, give us a call for your "Complimentary DRX Assessment" and we'll help to determine whether your condition may respond and heal without surgery through our regenerative, non-surgical procedures. Recent medical studies have shown that with degenerated, bulging, and herniated discs (something your MRI would show), DRX9000™ decompression creates a negative hydraulic suction effect within them, drawing bulging disc material, oxygen, water, and healing nutrients back into the disc, creating a healthy environment for disc regeneration.
As the DRX9000™ decompresses the discs, the pressure on the compressed discs and nerves is reduced and reversed, creating a vacuum or “suction effect” within the disc. Many experts believe that this “suction effect”, which pulls nutrient rich fluids back into the discs, actually stimulates the growth of the adult stem cells within the disc, enabling the disc to regenerate, repair, and regain its inner “cushion” function.
Essential nutrients, oxygen, and water are drawn back into the discs through negative intradiscal pressure created by the computerized decompressive forces of the DRX9000™. Adult stem cells within the discs are then able to become healthy disc tissue cells, enabling the discs to regenerate. Disc height is increased, (documented in a recent 2010 medical study), the discs and nerves can heal, and no surgery is required!
Could You Be A Candidate For Our DRX9000™ Spinal Decompression Program?
Doctors from the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Stanford and Duke Universities have all proven in recent studies that the DRX9000 decompresses, repairs and heals compressed, herniated and degenerative discs . . . Lasers have been used in medicine since the early 1960's. Medical lasers were more widely studied and utilized in Europe and Russia in the early years, but have quickly been gaining more acceptance and utilization here in the US over the last 10 years as Americans seek out safer alternatives to drugs and surgery. Perhaps the most amazing discovery with medical lasers have been the "regenerative" or healing effects they produce. Given the proper wavelengths, power, and protocol, healing lasers are bringing not only pain relief, but regenerative healing to more people than ever before. The following article on Low Level Light Therapy is from the North American Association for Laser Therapy (NAALT) and provides a good introduction to the science of Laser Therapy.
Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT)
Low Level Light Therapy - Biological reaction to light is nothing new. We normally experience this through our eyes which are obviously photosensitive – our vision is based upon light hitting our retinas and creating a chemical reaction that allows us to see. We experience this with vitamin D synthesis in our skin – due to sunlight creating biochemical reactions. We experience this with suntans – due to the light of the sun stimulating our melanocytes to proliferate and give us “brown” skin. Light reacts chemically with other things as well. Hydrogen peroxide is stored in dark bottles so that light can’t get in and initiate a chemical degradation. Light can photo-chemically affect all things – eventually – one way or another.
Low level laser therapy does not induce heating in tissue like surgical or aesthetic lasers. It’s all in the photochemical reactions of certain wavelengths of light with our cell membranes, cellular organelles and enzymes. Compromised cells respond better than healthy cells to photochemical reactions so that brief treatments with low level light on damaged tissue can induce a complex chain of physiological reactions to enhance wound healing and tissue regeneration, reduce acute inflammation, treat chronic pain and even to make our skin look younger and more vibrant.
Red light accelerates hair growth. It has also been shown to biochemically melt fat cells. Low level infrared light has been shown to significantly enhance the recuperation of stroke victims by shining a low level laser that you can’t even see or feel on top of your head for a few minutes at a time. Sounds like magic doesn’t it? – well, it is. It’s light and it does seem to have magical properties. The science of this “magic” has become increasingly better explained in recent years and it is apparent that this is a valid therapy for many conditions. In spite of the scientific validity of LLLT there are still many commercial claims for devices that are not well supported and some are in fact just plain incredulous. The message to take from this though is to not throw out the baby with the bathwater when confronted with some of the fringe claims of LLLT. It has substantial merit as a valid therapy.
It has been called many names over the years including biostimulation, LLLT, cold laser therapy, and more recently photobiomodulation. Low level lasers (mostly diode lasers in the 10-200 milliwatt range) have been the primary instruments but there are also non-laser light emitting diodes (LED’s) and other light sources that are used.
In the U.S. one sees these low level red, blue, yellow and infrared lights used in sports medicine clinics as part of the physical therapy to enhance healing of joint and soft tissue injuries such as arthritis treatment, carpal tunnel syndrome or athletic sprains and injuries. It has been used prior to radiation therapy in breast cancer to prevent the inflammatory dermatitis that is frequently associated with this. In MediSpas these devices are used for periodic treatments to enhance skin rejuvenation.
The devices are employed as one of the therapy options in pain clinics to treat chronic pain, including shingles pain. Some units are even being sold to the home market for general treatment of muscular and joint “aches and pains”. It’s used for things like low back or cervical neck pain, and is good to consider for use in hard to manage problems like fibromyalgia.
Its major use however has been outside of the United States, and outside of FDA restrictions, where it has been a long standing therapy for wound healing – especially chronic wounds such as decubitus or diabetic ulcers that are otherwise hard to heal. In research, LLLT appears to enhance nerve regeneration in spinal cord injuries.
There is a related type of low level laser use that has been widely publicized, but does not appear to work by the same “photobiomodulation” mechanisms. That’s the “stop smoking” and “weight loss” laser clinics that appear all over the United States. Aside from some strong testimonial support from treated clients, there does not currently appear to be much scientific evidence establishing the mechanisms of action of this type of laser therapy. That doesn’t mean that it won’t eventually be found to be valid, but the evidence is just not there yet and it should not be confused with conventional LLLT. In “stop smoking” or “weight loss” the light is directed at certain anatomical acupuncture points that correspond to nerve networks. Regular LLLT for tissue regeneration or chronic pain treatment does not require this. If the laser therapy proves to have an actual effect to help people stop smoking then it is probably an acupuncture type of therapy that simply uses low level lasers instead of needles to induce these changes, and it would then beg the question of whether the needles wouldn’t then be more effective to begin with (although many people would prefer the light over penetrating needles).
The potential applications of low level laser therapy are very widespread, and too broad to list in much detail in this introductory article. You should now have a better idea of what LLLT is however, and differentiate it from related low power laser uses like stop smoking. When you are ready to research it more you’ll find prolific material that has been generated over the years with Russia having probably the most experience, but also Europe, South America and the Middle East.

We consider ourselves to be so fortunate here at the South Coast Spine Center, to consistently witness the healing and life restoration process in our patients. From time to time we like to share the life changing stories of our growing list of "DRX Success" testimonials. Here's one that addresses improvement of a patient who was previously diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy (pain, weakness, and loss of sensations due to nerve damage) that doctors originally thought was caused by diabetic issues, but who experienced significant relief with our DRX9000 Spinal Decompression therapy procedure for his lumbar spine. Prepare to be inspired with hope . . .
I was very skeptical when a close friend first recommended that I should see Dr. Bell. Every time I ever mentioned my back problems to her, she strongly told me that I needed to go see him. I probably never would have, but my back got so bad, I had to do something. It finally got so bad (7-10 level pain out of 10 being unbearable pain) that I couldn’t even get dressed to go to church (couldn’t bend, twist, or pick anything up). Then a couple of other good friends that were patients of Dr. Bell’s also told me of their relief of their back problems.
When we made the decision to go ahead with the series of treatments, I decided to really commit to it and see it through. Starting with the first treatments, I could feel the difference with my back. Gradually I had less pain and felt more and more flexibility and relief from the constant back pain that I had. The treatments were totally painless and I always felt very relaxed during and after each treatment.
After the treatments I was curious about how long it would last. It has now been over four months since the treatments were completed and I am still pain free and have much improved flexibility. Another side benefit is my peripheral neuropathy that I had in my legs is much improved. I had been diagnosed as having peripheral neuropathy for years, because I’m a “borderline diabetic”, whatever that is. All the time it was caused by compressed nerves in my lower back.
After all is said and done, the money that I spent on my back at the South Coast Spine Center and Dr. Bell is the best investment that I have ever made. Dr. Bell, his wife and assistant Cyndi, and their staff are caring professionals. If you have problems with your spine like I did, they are, in my humble opinion, the very best option that there is.
Sincerely,
Gary Burningham, Chula Vista, CA

Back pain and neck pain are two of the most common maladies suffered by humanity. More time and enjoyment in life are lost due to these conditions than perhaps from any other type of ache or pain, according to US Department of Health statistics.
Additionally, medical research has found that the most common cause of chronic and severe neck and back pain is related to compression of the intervertebral discs, those shock absorbing cushions made of fiber and gel that are positioned between the vertebrae or bones of the spine. These discs can be torn suddenly due to traumatic injury, or they can wear down over time with repeated stress or age, resulting in bulging, herniation, or degeneration. This in turn causes varying degrees of pain and disability, costing Americans literally billions of dollars every year.
So what's the answer? There are many gimmicks, "experts", drugs, pills, devices, and techniques for getting rid of back and neck pain, but the first question that needs to be answered is, "What's causing the pain?"
Once it has been correctly determined that one or more spinal discs are damaged, degenerated, bulging, protruding, or herniated, a few additional tests are made to determine whether a patient is a good candidate for one of our treatment methods. If their condition is suitable for it, one of a number
of relatively new forms of treatments called "True Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression" administered with DRX9000 technology can be implemented. This technology has been developed and improved over the past 20 plus years, and has now been made available in it's most advanced form with our DRX9000 systems.
Additionally, with over 20 years of experience in utilizing this form of treatment, I've learned some valuable skills on how to administer it very successfully, even in some of the most severe cases that have failed to respond to other treatments, including surgery. The success rates we've seen at the South Coast Spine Center over the last 5 years have exceeding anything I've experienced in both the orthopedic/neurological and alternative physical medicine treatment settings. Check out some of our "DRX Success Stories" at: www.SouthCoastSpine.com
Typically, the cause of neck or back pain is multi-factoral. Therefore, an "in-depth" evaluation by a qualified physician with proper experience and training is the first important step. Necessary diagnostic imaging (MRI, CT, X-ray, etc.) and other diagnostic testing (EMG, NCV, Ortho/Neuro, etc.) is also essential for determining the precise nature of the underlying condition. Once a proper diagnosis is made, then the right treatment options can be rationally addressed.
Far too often, patients who arrive at our offices for the first time have never been tested and diagnosed properly. That's why we take the time and energy required to obtain the right tests and studies to arrive at the correct diagnosis before recommending any type of treatment. Once the patient's condition is correctly diagnosed, it is explained in detail. Once understood, all treatment options are discussed and the best ones are selected. If the patient needs a referral to another specialist, we recommend the one(s) we believe to be most qualified.
With that being said, if a patient's condition is best treated with what we provide at the South Coast Spine Center, my favorite part of my job begins; getting rid of the pain and starting the healing and rehabilitative treatment plan! Our greatest satisfaction comes from "Relieving Pain . . . Restoring Lives" as our mission reflects. In addition to our "serious" athlete patients, we've also been fortunate to have successfully treated a few world champion athletes here at the South Coast Spine Center. Although these champions are in top physical condition, their bodies are still subject to wear and tear, like the rest of us "mere humans". As a result, even World Record Holding World Champions need our treatment to remain competitive from time to time. Although their sponsorship agreements with some of the largest sports and fitness companies prevent them from sharing their testimonials publicly, their success with our treatment has provided us with even greater confidence in the science and technology that we utilize to bring healing to all people, from the weekend warriors to the world class professionals!
Here's an example of a triathlete who was not restricted from sharing his testimonial with you. Since he puts his body through some of the most extreme stress imaginable, we figured that his story might serve as an inspiration to other athletes, professional and non-professional, who may also find themselves suffering with debilitating pain as a result of their chosen sport. Before DRX: I’m a 34 year old Triathlete so I thought running thru the pain was normal, but it began to get to the point where I couldn’t even play around with my 3 year old son, it was too painful to do, it put me in a bad mood, and worse mood even because I couldn’t sleep more than 2 hours without having to change position and 6 pillows around my body. One of these nights I got up and searched the web for a quick answer. There are a lot of gimmicks out there so I approached this with caution and a lot of skepticism.
During DRX: I quickly got to know Dr. Bell and his staff, they are a down to earth family with high moral values, really nice people. The treatment center and ambiance makes you feel right at home and you can even watch some movies while you’re there. Nothing is painful and you are well attended, it is actually quite comfy and after a couple of sessions you start to feel the difference. First thing I noticed is that I could put my shoes on without pain or having to sit down.
After DRX: I am now confident that it works and its no scam, the doctor has my number and I will be happy to talk to anyone who is skeptical like I was. It’s been only 1 month since I finished, but I will give you my honest condition of the moment. Right now I am a much happier guy, I can play with my kid, I can run (zero pain) , I can sleep 8 hours straight and best of all I’m in a much better mood now.
I hereby give permission to Dr. Bell to use my patient testimonial in any of his marketing.

Rudy (Rodolfo) is competing regularly again in Triathalons, Half Marathons and Ironman competitions, and is a top competitor as he has finished in the top 7 in his division in 2 recent races! Congratulations Rudy, and Thank You for sharing your DRX Success Story of inspiration for us all!

The latest “cold & flu season” is here. Concerns over the flu are even greater now with the foreboding news about the H1N1 Virus. But you can prepare and protect yourself with some basic “common sense” and by heeding the findings of some recent studies on the flu. Read on to find out how to survive and thrive this winter and hopefully avoid the cold, the traditional winter flu, or even more importantly, that other nasty strain with a little “preventive care”.
Another Reason to Exercise
An recent study conducted on five hundred adults demonstrated that those who did the most active exercise experienced a twenty five per cent lower incidence catching colds during the year. The point here is that a good round of exercise on a daily or every other day basis, one that is a bit tiring, is one way to increase your resistance to the cold or flu. Stationary bikes provide a quick way to get the heart pumping in a safe and easily accessible form of cardiovascular stimulation. However, simply cranking out several jumping-jacks, squats, lunges, push-ups, and sit-up/crunches can be an even quicker and easier way to get that burst of physical exertion.
Contact . . .
Since the cold and flu viruses travel most effectively through the moist air, and can also be picked up by direct contact, avoid touching your face, rubbing your eyes, nose or mouth with your hands whenever you are out in public. Carrying a small amount of hand sanitizer or convenient hand wipes is always a good idea. However, washing hands, cleaning household surfaces, and most importantly, avoiding hand to face contact are some of the most effective ways of limiting exposure to those winter viruses.
Diet Control . . .
One of the biggest challenges we face during the holidays is the abundance of food that is "foisted upon us!" I've found that the key to enjoying it all without "getting hurt" is summed up in one word; "MODERATION". Staying balanced in what we eat is always important, but even more so during the holidays when there are typically more sweets and other tasty treats available. So, exercise some control and partake of the variety of goodies, in SMALL AMOUNTS. "Don't get crazy!" Just eat a little of the sweet stuff, and make sure that you balance it out with some of the more "natural stuff", ie. veggies, meats, etc., with the goal of eating a balanced combination of foods, in smaller amounts than your eyes and mouth are telling you to.
Okay, so you didn't like that idea very much. So here's a way you can make it easier; Dr. Agatston, Cardiologist and Author of The South Beach Diet has 6 strategies on how to limit your consumption during times of "nutritional temptation". Here they are:
Finally, here a few other natural “evidence-based” remedies for avoiding the cold and flu:
Vitamin C
Vitamin C daily can help prevent the flu. Clinical studies have shown that large megadoses of Vitamin C are bit absorbed by the body. Vitamin C is concentrated in the white blood cells that fight disease. Vitamin C is a free radical scavenger and helps protect the white blood cells. Research has shown that vitamin C taken daily can prevent a cold or flu or shorten the duration. It is best taken daily as prevention. A 1999 study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics indicated that 1,000 mg of vitamin every hour for 6 hours and 1,000 mg three times daily afterward can effectively relieve or even prevent flu symptoms.
Warnings: If you take vitamin C with a calcium supplement, you will not get diarrhea. Reduce dosage if there is a history of kidney stones. Megadosing can also interfere with diabetes testing and blood clotting.
Dosage: 500 and 1,000 milligrams daily, up to 10,000 milligrams daily when fighting the flu. A possible alternative is to start with 3000 mg and then 1000 mg an hour until symptoms decrease.
Elderberry
This herb is known to support the immune system and to stimulate the body`s ability to fight viruses. Elderberries have been used in medicine since the Fifth Century, for treating the flu and ill effects of the chills, and have been referred to by Hippocrates, Dioscurides and Plinius. Studies have shown elderberry to inhibit replication of human influenza virus type A, type B and animal strains from swine and turkeys in cell cultures and to reduce the duration of the flu by approximately four days.
Studies conducted on elderberries show a reduction of flu symptoms. During a Southern Israel flu epidemic in 1992-93, improvement in flu symptoms was noted within 24 hours in 20% of participants. This included a reduction of fever, muscle ache, pain and coughing. By the second day, 73% felt better compared to the 6% who were not treated.
Dosage: one teaspoon, four times daily at first sign of a cold or flu. (Sambucol, by Nature's Way)
Vitamin A
Vitamin A increases immunity by promoting T-lymphocyte activity and Beta carotene, one of the components of vitamin A; it increases thymus gland function and stimulates the growth of the white blood cells that fight disease. Vitamin A increases the production of mucus, thereby aiding in cleansing. It is also an antioxidant.
Garlic
Garlic is great as a preventative and as a treatment. I prefer “Nature Made” tablets available at most grocery stores and pharmacy stores. Take two tablets three times a day until the mucus production has slowed down dramatically, or until the color of mucus becomes clear rather than yellow or green. Raw garlic has antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. Researchers in England found that garlic can speed up recovery from a cold and increase resistance. Study participants had half the number of colds and made a more rapid recovery.
NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine)
NAC is an amino acid that naturally stimulates glutathione, the most potent cellular antioxidant in the body. People who have autoimmune problems are often deficient in glutathione. NAC has been used to raise immunity to the flu, and also to treat chronic respiratory problems. A recent study was conducted in which most of the subjects were over 65. Results showed that only 29 percent of those taking NAC developed flu symptoms, compared to 51 percent of those who took the placebo. (NAC Is used in hospitals as the primary treatment for Tylenol and other drug overdoses! It's a major liver detoxifier.)
Dosage: 300 - 600mg. per day for one to two weeks at a time.
Zinc
Zinc inhibits the reproduction of rhinovirus, and has been found to be especially good for treating viral sore throats. A recent study on the effectiveness of zinc showed that taking a zinc lozenge every 2-3 hours, shortened the duration of cold symptoms. Overdosing with zinc can have side effects, such as an effect on the uptake of iron.
Dosage: one lozenge every 2-3 hours for duration of the cold or flu. Keep in the mouth for 5-10 minutes. Or 30 to 50 milligrams a day.
(Note: Always check with your family doctor before adding a supplement, especially if you are taking any medication)
If you do happen to succumb to the cold or flu, or you're feeling a bit "viral", just skip the exercise suggestions, and get as much rest/sleep as you can, AND get some of that Elderberry into your system right away. It's been proven to not only reduce the symptoms by over 70%, but it also reduces the healing time by almost 60%. (I recommend Sambucol Black Elderberry Extract by Nature Made)
Not only can you reduce your chances of getting the flu by exercising and controlling other aspects of your health, you will also naturally feel better as you become pro-active. Take control of your own health, continue doing what you are doing now; seeking the advice of those who promote healthy living. Not only will you have a stronger immune system, but you will feel better also.
Yours in Great Health . . . for a Healthier, Happier, Holiday Season,

Just as studies have proven that good feelings and positive thoughts can positively influence one's overall health and wellbeing, recent studies confirm once again the converse, that "Bad Feelings Can Absolutely Harm Your Health!"
Recently published in the prestigious medical Journal, Stroke (Aug 27, 2009) studies from McGill University and the Mayo Clinic have recently documented two specific outcomes in women experiencing feelings of hopelessness; 1] apathy and slower recovery following strokes, and 2] unexpected thickening of the carotid artery (the main artery supplying the brain) in healthy middle-aged women. These phenomenae have confirmed long held beliefs in support of other studies that "negative thoughts can have negative health consequences."
A previous study led by Everson-Rose, found an association between hopelessness and cardiovascular disease in Finnish men, as did another study in women with documented cardiovascular disease.
A vitally important part of physical medicine is active exercise. Not only does exercise help patients' physical recovery, but it is well known to reduce the incedence and intensity of depressive mood disorders, enabling an increase in overall healing and return of functional capacity. These recent studies confirm the physiological basis behind these findings.
The clinical message is this; physicians should tell patients that emotional states can have a physical effect, and that they should seek appropriate treatment for them. Psychiatric and psychologic treatment for depression and other mood disorders is warranted as it can affect all aspects of our health!
Here are some simple and easy tips on how to improve your mood and feelings:
These are just a few simple suggestions that can make life more enjoyable, letting a little more sunshine in to brighten your day. . . . and in the process, improve your health . . . and possibly even save your life!
If you're in need of help, seek the advice of your medical health professional, and do it sooner rather than later.
Yours in good health . . . and happiness!

Press Release, April 17, 2009 Recent news reports posted on the internet have been stating the benefits of ozonation therapy for lower back pain relief. At first glance, those suffering from chronic and severe disc related back or neck pain might become hopeful that a “new cure” for their pain has arrived. However, further investigation into these initial claims reveals some flaws in the results reported in the initial studies from Italy. In fact, according to the study referenced below, published in the American Journal of Neuroradiology, prominent physician researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham have clearly identified the mistaken data reported in the Italian study. A copy of their findings is found below:
A.M. Bertolia and G.S. Alarcóna
a Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology
University of Alabama at Birmingham
Birmingham, Ala
We read with interest Bonetti et al’s article "Intraforaminal O2–O3 Versus Periradicular Steroidal Infiltrations in Lower Back Pain: Randomized Controlled Study," which appeared in the May issue of the AJNR.1 We came across this paper as we were searching for the possible beneficial effects of ozone therapy in fibromyalgia, which had been pointed out to us at a recent European meeting. The conclusions from this paper are that oxygen-ozone treatment is highly effective in relieving acute and chronic lower back pain and sciatica and that this treatment can be administered as a first option rather than epidural steroids. The authors support their conclusions with percentages and P values noted in the text as well as in the abstract, but not in the Table. In examining the actual data shown in the Table, we realized that the statistical analyses performed were flawed, given that the outcomes (excellent, good, or poor) are not independent observations. Therefore, the comparisons cannot be limited to those patients in one category with the exclusion of those in the others, but rather have to be performed with the entire data in a classic 2 (treatment type) by 3 (outcome type) format (2 df). The data would then read as noted in Tables 1 (for the intermediate outcomes) and 2 (for the long-term outcomes) that accompany this letter. None of the derived 2 values shown in these tables reached 5.991, which would be the required value for a significance of 0.05. The conclusions reached in this paper are, therefore, not supported by the data presented.
Additionally, the authors of the original flawed study, Dr. M. Bonetti, and Dr. M. Leonardi, issued their own admission of the misleading “transcription error” in their study which no longer supports the benefit of ozone injections for back pain. Their apology is printed below.
Admission of Error In Study On Reported Benefits Of Ozone Therapy for Lower Back Pain:
M. Bonettib and M. Leonardib
Department of Neuroradiology and Division of Neurology, Istituto Clinico Citta di Brescia, Italy
Reply:
The point raised by our colleagues highlights a mistake arising from an error in transcribing the published table. The correct figures are listed in the table below:
When the single results are separated out (excellent, good, poor), the long-term effects of treatment are no longer statistically significant, . . . In conclusion, we regret the transcription error in the Table and apologize for this unwitting mistake. We are grateful to our colleagues for their attentive reading of our paper, which disclosed the error. We are certain that we have now clarified the true significance of our results in line with the overall findings of our paper.
