Obesity has become an epidemic in our modern culture. For most Americans, especially over the age of 40, the ease of putting on a few extra pounds is accentuated by our consumer driven, fast-paced lifestyle. The only thing that doesn’t seem to “go fast” is our sometimes futile efforts to lose weight! What’s up with that?
On the serious side, obesity is morbidly connected to other serious and potentially life threatening conditions like heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Many Americans feel helpless in their attempts to shed pounds, but the good news is that there are newer, better and easier ways to lose weight and keep it off than ever before.
So, I’m taking a moment out of the fast pace to write down a few “strategies” to help us all realize that we can make progress in the “battle of the bulge”. Success is as they say, “80% strategy, 20% skill”. Here are a few simple strategies; . . . I leave the “skill part” to you. Okay, maybe I can help you with that too, . . . but you’ll have to read this article to the end to find out how I can help.
“Obesigenic” means “causing obesity” and “leptogenic” means “contributing to thinness.” People make dozens of small obesigenic and leptogenic decisions each day, often without even thinking about them. And the effects of those decisions are cumulative: They add up over time.
Examples of obesigenic habits:
- Eating three meals a day
- Having only coffee or orange juice for breakfast
- Watching TV after 10:00 p.m. nightly
- Eating more pasta and rice
- Eating out at least four times weekly
- Getting four hours of sleep
- Finishing your meal with dessert
- Drinking more caffeinated drinks
- Drinking more diet soda than water
- Wearing clothes with elastic waistbands
Examples of leptogenic habits:
- Eating a substantial breakfast each morning
- Using the stairs whenever possible
- Parking far away from the store and walking
- Taking a five-minute power nap when tired
- Exercising five to seven days a week
- Getting seven to eight hours of sleep per night
- Eating fish at least twice a week
- Eating more fruits and vegetables
- Drinking at least eight glasses of water per day
- Choosing healthy-minded friends
Being aware of these habits and focusing on the good (leptogenic) ones can be a great starting point to a healthier lifestyle. Additionally, getting a check-up with your healthcare provider is another important step in determining your overall health condition and your readiness to embark on a weight loss program.
